96 Jeep Cherokee Has No Heat?

Postby carbry72 » Sun May 13, 2012 7:15 pm

Im an auto body tech and Im stumped by this one. 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L Automatic w/AC. Started a year ago or so slowly, the jeep lost its ability to produce any hot air in the passenger compartment. Blows cold air just fine, no a/c though (the compressor is junk), Ive replaced the thermostat recently, the water pump recently (not because of this problem), blend door operation is fine, heater hoses in engine compartment get hot as they should, replaced the controls on the dash, took a garden hose the heater hoses to check for a clog (there wasnt), checked all of the fuses and relays, replaced the heater hose 4-way spliter in the engine compartment, the coolant temp sits at normal temp, and also flushed and replaced coolant. Nothing seems to be wrong so im stumped as to why im not getting any heat. Im an I-car certified tech and have been doing this for a long time so only answer if you know what your talking about, thanks!

Take the hoses off the engine and make sure that water flows from the engine. Then take a garden hose and push wat through the heater core. You are not getting flow through the heater core.

tyler, that 4-way splitter you see is actually called the heater control valve and I believe it should be activated by vacuum.
You can check it out by selecting MAX/AC and that should close the valve to shut the coolant supply to the heater core.
I believe yours is stuck closed.

Check for vacuum at the blend door actuator. Make sure it moves in both directions. Is the heat any better when set to recirculate?
I've also seen the wrong water pump installed on Jeeps. they have 2 different water pumps that fit. The impellers are clockwise and anti-clockwise so make sure you have flow in the right direction. Damn bunch of BOZO's on answers today aren't there?!

You may need to bleed the cooling system. I had a 99 Pontiac Grand Am with similar problems I found that after you do any kind of work to the cooling system such as the thermostat ect that you must bleed the cooling system to get the air out. Good luck I hope this helps
