2006 Vauxhall Zafira 1.6 making odd noise?

Postby giynn53 » Thu Apr 21, 2011 7:26 pm

My 2006 Vauxhall Zafira 1.6 petrol is making an odd noise when idling at low revs. It is not continious, only when the engine is warm and every 30 - 40 seconds.

It's hard to describe, it does not sound mechanical, and it does not sound like trapped air somewhere in the system. When it makes the noise you can hear the engine dip slightly.

Any ideas? Where I am there is no easy access to a good mechanic!

Hi
modern engine management systems are checking all sorts of items so is most likely a sensor which is ticking and the throttle is fly by wire and that does make noises when the engine is idling.

Don't worry about it, all cars 'dip' in revs when idling. The 'dip' is due to your engine's electric fan starting every now and then as the engine cooling water temperature rises when you're idling and no air is passing through the radiator like when you're driving..

Another reason is that if your car has aic conditioning and it's on, the compressor will start also to maintain the the temperature you've set inside the car.

Both 'dips' and noises are perfectly normal and absolutely nothing to worry about.
