Speedo/ABS not working on MK5 Vauxhall Astra 1.7 TDi?

Postby fleming6 » Sun May 27, 2012 4:16 am

A couple of months ago, the speedo started playing up on my Astra, then it just stopped working completely and the ABS light has been on ever since. I have taken it to 2 garages and still it is not not fixed! The first said they thought the ABS pump could have gone wrong and quoted over £1000 to fix it with no guarantee it was the problem. The second thought it was the ABS sensor on the passenger wheel, so i have just forked out over £300 to get it fixed, but it has done nothing, Now they are telling me to see a Vauxhall specialist, as they said they can't communicate with the ECU and are not sure what the issue is....any one else had any similar issues and if so, what was the fix?! MOT is due now and it will fail with this problem...

You should take it to the vauxhaull dealership, they will diagnose using a computer and tell you the real problem

The offside front wheel sensor is goosed. The pulses from this sensor are sent to the abs module and from there to the instrument module that operates the speedo. Most modern cars now do not drive the speedo from the gearbox its cheaper just to link in the abs pulses.

Sounds like these garages should have their staff wear stetsons and ride bloody ponies.

Just buy a sensor of e bay (about 50 quid) plug it into the abs loom and check the abs light goes off after you turn on the ignition. If so just fit it to the hub carrier and your done.
